Mattress Care
Caring for a traditional coil mattress is pretty simple. You just flip it and rotate it every once in a while, vacuum out the dust on occasion, and be sure to keep the sheets clean. But what about a latex mattress? How do you go about providing care to your latex mattress? Do the same rules still apply?
The answer is a definitive no. As latex mattresses are often organic and made out of natural, biodegradable fibers, they require a unique approach to care and maintenance. If you own a latex mattress (or are considering buying one) then be sure to heed this advice:
- Keep it out of direct sunlight – If you have large windows, then invest in some heavy duty curtains or shades. Direct sunlight can cause the latex to oxidize, which will cut into the lifespan of your mattress.
- Be careful with liquids – Try to avoid bringing liquids near your mattress, but if a spill does occur, make sure to wash the spot thoroughly with soap and water. Then use a towel to soak up as much excess moisture as possible, and dry the area with a hair dryer or fan. If moisture is left on the latex, it could result in mold or mildew.
- Avoid flames – Latex is a flammable substance, so don’t smoke or bring a lit candle too close to your bed. One spark, and the mattress could be destroyed in minutes.
- Give it room to breathe – Latex mattresses need to breathe, so instead of opting for a traditional box spring, invest in a ventilated, slatted bed frame instead. This will provide the breathability your mattress needs to survive over the long term.
