Bed Smart 101
1. Install it Properly
Your new mattress and foundation must be installed correctly. Improper installation can damage your new sleep set or even void the Manufacturer’s warranty. Thinks like improper bending, placement, and handling can hurt your mattress and even yourself! Our Delivery Team has been trained to install products correctly to ensure your sleep system is set up properly. If you choose to transport and install on your own, take extra care to ensure your investment is correctly installed and properly supported.
2. Rotate it
Mattresses today need to be rotated from top-to-bottom, unless instructed otherwise from the manufacturer. Rotating your mattress will help evenly distribute your body weight across the surface, slowing the wear-and-tear on its support system over time. Rotation can also reduce the depth of body impressions, maximizing the lifespan of your sleep investment.
3. Protect It.
Just like the name implies, a mattress protector can shield your sleep system from stains and soiling that would otherwise void your Manufacturer’s warranty and speed the breakdown of your mattress. A good quality, washable mattress protector is a must-have to keep your sleep set fresh and clean for years to come.
4. Let it breathe
Just like a new car or a new pair of leather shoes, mattresses can have a “new product” odor. Once your new mattress has been set up in your room, leave the mattress and foundation uncovered and well ventilated for a few hours. Just let it breathe!
5. Give it good support
What you put underneath your mattress can make all of the difference to the life of your sleep system. Supporting your mattress with a sturdy, high-quality box, foundation, or bed frame will provide proper support for many years. Queen and King size mattresses require a frame that has strong center support, this will prevent the mattress from bowing or breaking down in the middle. We always recommend using a new support system with new mattresses, as an old one could cause sagging and irreparable damage to your new sleep investment.
6. Clean it…Properly
Be careful if you clean your mattress. The chemicals in dry cleaning agents/spot removers may be harmful to the fabric or underlying materials. Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method for mattresses. If you need to tackle a pesky stain, use mild soap with cold water and apply lightly. Do not ever soak a mattress or foundation. Contact your mattress’ Manufacturer directly for their recommended cleaning methods.
7. The Pesky Law Tag, KEEP IT.
It is not illegal to remove the law tag on your mattress, but the information on the label provides required information should you have a warranty claim later on. If the law tag is removed and discarded, the Manufacturer’s warranty will be voided! Unsure of what the law label looks like? It is usually a thick tag sewn onto the mattress near the head or foot of the bed.
8. No Jumping!
Your new mattress is not a trampoline, so never let the kids jump on your sleep set. Roughhousing and bouncing could do damage to the interior construction of your bed, voiding the Manufacturer’s warranty and ruining the comfort of the mattress. Avoid ‘plopping’ on the bed as well, as it could weaken and potentially break necessary components for support. The best way to get into bed is by gently climbing in.
9. Banish the Board
Never put a board between the mattress and foundation. While it sounds like a logical idea to help add support to your mattress, it will only make the problem worse over time. If your mattress reaches the point where you feel like you need to put a board under it, it is time to replace.
10. Follow manufacturer’s instructions
Be sure to follow any specific guidelines from your Manufacturer for the best method of mattress care. If the Manufacturer determines your mattress has been damaged by misuse, it could void the warranty!
11. Out with the old
If your old mattress wasn’t good enough for you, it isn’t good enough for anyone else. It’s time to get rid of it. If you’re concerned about where it goes, BedMart offers a mattress-removal program upon delivery of a new mattress.
