BedMart’s values and mission evolved from the vision of Steven Stone. His belief in serving the community and providing them with a superior customer experience has shaped the company for the past 27 years.
Steven Stone was born in Portland, Oregon. In his early days, he spent his time working alongside his father at their family store, Stone Furniture. When they closed, Steven went on to work as a sales rep for various companies, including top furniture and mattress brands. Throughout his time as a rep, Steven helped many companies find success. One day, he decided he was done traveling and wanted to create a business of his own. Steven wanted to focus more on his growing family, while still helping the community. At that time, the community needed a local mattress store. Thus, BedMart was founded.
Humble Beginnings
In 1992, Steven opened a one-store operation with the support of his wife Sherry. The store sold discounted, discontinued product. He soon transitioned to selling a wider selection and latest technologies. Throughout the years, he added more people to the BedMart family. Each sales associate had the same mission as Steven – a love for helping others and working as a team.
Changing the Mattress Shopping Experience
BedMart slowly expanded into different Portland neighborhoods. As the company expanded, Steven made sure the values remained the same. In 2010, the BedMart Outlet was introduced. These stores introduced value-oriented furniture and products from top mattress brands.
At the beginning of 2015, Steven decided to start the New Year with a big leap by expanding BedMart’s premium shopping experience to customers in Hawaii.This exciting news marked BedMart’s first expansion outside of the Pacific Northwest.
BedMart Today
The Stone family always focused on creating a better life for their customers and the communities they serve. Over the years, they have donated millions of dollars worth of mattresses, furniture, accessories, and monetary contributions to help serve those in need. With their resources, the Stones have partnered with Sunshine Division, Portland Rescue Mission, Community Warehouse, YWCA, Albertina Kerr, and many more.
As the stores grew, so did BedMart. Steven constantly sought new ways to improve the shopping experience at our stores — including trying new store formats and introducing our exclusive smartMatch technology.
BedMart now has 36 locations, serving Oregon, SW Washington and Hawaii. Each of the locations carry the latest sleep technologies, with 7 locations also carrying furniture.
Today you can find Steven, Sherry, and their children working to ensure that our promise to provide the community with a better mattress shopping experience. You’ll even see his daughter and our spokeswoman, Elana Stone, around town and on TV!
